Typing test guide
Everything we measure and how. The numbers come from these formulas only.
Typing tests and WPM
A typing test shows you text and times how fast you copy it.
Speed is usually given in words per minute (WPM).
Words vary in length, so five characters count as one word.
Spaces count as characters. That is the common convention.
Korean is counted differently
Korean sites count keystrokes per minute, and they do not all count the same way.
We count jamo keys on the 2-set layout, so our Korean numbers may not match other sites.
Home row
Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ;.
F and J have small bumps so you can find them without looking.
Each finger owns the keys above and below its home key.
Hit the space bar with your thumb.
How this app measures
Formulas
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
Keys per minute = keystrokes of correct characters ÷ minutes.
Accuracy = (characters − characters wrong on the first try) ÷ characters.
Speeds are rounded down. Accuracy keeps one decimal place.
English letters, spaces and punctuation are one keystroke each. Shift is not counted.
Korean syllables count their jamo keys: 가 is 2, 각 is 3, 과 is 3, 닭 is 4.
The clock runs from your first keystroke until the last character is right.
A run ends only when the text matches exactly. Fix mistakes with Backspace.
Daily race
The daily text is picked by date, so everyone types the same text that day.
English and Korean have separate texts and separate rankings.
Your first keystroke tells the ranking server you started. Finishing tells it you are done.
Your ranked time is what the server measured between the two. Lower is better.
Race as often as you like. Each period keeps your best time.
Names show only for people with a Gwirae account. Otherwise you are listed anonymously.
Runs we do not rank
Paste and drop are blocked, and a run where you tried them is not ranked.
Runs where four or more characters arrived in one input are not ranked. Autocomplete does that.
Runs with input that did not come from a person are not ranked.
Runs faster than 1,250 keys per minute in English (250 WPM) or 2,000 in Korean are not ranked.
Those limits sit well above known human records.
These runs still stay in your history, with a mark.
History
Runs stay in this browser only. The last 500 are kept.
If a subscription ends, your runs stay. The subscription only shows them in more detail.
Basics
Go for accuracy first. Push speed once you stay above 95%.
Look at the screen, not your hands.
Keep your wrists light. Do not rest them hard on the desk.
Several short runs teach your fingers faster than one long one.
Getting faster
Read a word or two ahead of what you are typing. Your hands stop less.
Learn common chunks like the, ing and tion as single motions.
Weak keys mode picks sentences full of the keys you miss most.
Check your missed keys after each run and slow down on that finger.
Common problems
My phone types whole words at once
That is autocomplete or word suggestions.
Those runs are not ranked. Turn off autocomplete in your keyboard settings.
Korean does not type
Add a Korean keyboard in your OS settings and switch to it.
On Windows and Mac, the Han/Eng key or the input menu switches it.
My name is not on the ranking
Create a Gwirae account on ranks.gwirae.com to show a name.
Without one, your time still counts and shows anonymously.

Only authors who died before 1956, plus Korean constitution articles. Unchanged except curly quotes turned straight.
